MTC Training Tyneside opens applications for first apprenticeship cohort

Applications are now open for the first cohort of apprentices at MTC Training Tyneside, with aspiring engineers across the northeast able to apply for advanced manufacturing programmes starting in September 2026.
Delivered from MTC Training’s new facility at Cobalt Park, apprentices will be employed full-time by one of MTC Training’s partner employers while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Learners will gain on-the-job experience and salary, while returning to MTC Training Tyneside throughout the programme for additional learning and practical workshop training.
The first intake will include Level 3 Engineering Apprentices in Mechatronics Maintenance Technician and Engineering Fitter. Selected in response to regional skills demand identified through employer engagement, the programmes will equip learners with the technical skills employers say are in shortest supply, including automation, fault finding, maintenance, electrical and mechanical engineering, quality assurance, process improvement, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Applications can be made directly through MTC Training’s website. Candidates who meet the entry criteria will be invited to an Assessment Centre, where successful applicants from the process will be invited to apply for specific roles.
David Grailey, Managing Director at MTC Training, commented: “Opening applications for our first apprenticeships at MTC Training Tyneside is an important milestone. The northeast has a long and proud industrial heritage and, as its manufacturing and engineering sectors continue to grow and evolve, developing a skilled and dynamic workforce in our exciting sector is more important than ever.”
He adds: “We’re looking forward to working with employers across the region to help more people begin rewarding careers in engineering, while supporting industry build a sustainable pipeline of talent that supports productivity, innovation and long-term growth.”
The opening of applications marks the latest phase for MTC Training Tyneside, which was established to help address regional skills needs by delivering engineering apprenticeships, technical training and upskilling programmes for employers across the northeast. Made possible through funding from Lloyds, the centre’s launch extends the 15-year strategic partnership between Lloyds and MTC, from £15 million to over £18.5 million of sponsorship through to the end of 2029.
