Walter introduces new Xtra·tec® XT milling body

Walter is expanding the range of its Xtra·tec® XT M5130 milling cutters with new milling cutter bodies for the cost-effective machining of large surfaces at shallow depths of cut. The move responds to growing user requirements, especially for manufacturers wishing to machine large plain surfaces or stepped structures with minimal material removal. For these applications, Walter says it now delivers greater efficiency and productivity than ever before.

Using the existing indexable insert sizes for depths of cut less than 16 mm, Walter is expanding the available diameter range of its Xtra·tec® XT milling cutter family from the previous 80 mm (with BC09 or BC12 cutting inserts) to 100, 125 and 160 mm. Cartridge tools extend machining availability up to diameters of 315 mm. The smaller cutting inserts allow for a higher number of teeth per diameter. This capacity ensures faster and higher material removal rates on large surface areas, which subsequently reduces machining time.

The new variants feature a 12% increase in the cross-section of the indexable insert around the insert bore, a 34% larger contact area for the insert, and a 40% stronger tooth back for enhanced stability and process reliability.

Thanks to the smaller and therefore more cost-effective inserts, the application saves not only machining time but also cutting tool material costs. This expanded portfolio is ideal for a wide range of applications, from face and shoulder milling, pocket milling, ramping, and circular interpolation milling. Furthermore, it is suitable for all materials in the ISO groups P, K, M, N and S.
