UK launches DIADEM initiative to advance fusion manufacturing

A new UK research initiative, DIADEM, will develop advanced manufacturing methods for materials used in extreme environments, starting with fusion energy. Led by the University of Nottingham with UKAEA and industry partners, the project focuses on combining tungsten and copper using multi-metal additive manufacturing.
By overcoming challenges in joining dissimilar metals, DIADEM aims to create durable metamaterials for future fusion reactors and other high-performance applications. Funded by UKRI EPSRC, the initiative will support the UK’s fusion ambitions, including the STEP prototype power plant, and strengthen innovation across sectors such as aerospace, defence and healthcare.
