Time for the people, by Machinery & Manufacturing Publisher, Laura Crawford

The pace of change across UK manufacturing shows no sign of slowing. Since my last leader, we’ve seen British Steel return to public ownership, a move that underlines the strategic importance of safeguarding the nation’s industrial capability. And it’s all change at Number 10, bringing renewed opportunity to put manufacturing at the heart of the UK’s long-term economic agenda.

This month’s issue lands on the back of an exceptional Farnborough International Airshow, where increased footfall, world-leading technology and a stronger focus on international readiness demonstrated the strength and ambition of British industry.

Walking the exhibition halls, one message was clear: manufacturing is no longer just about productivity. It’s about resilience, security and collaboration. From aerospace and defence to precision engineering and advanced manufacturing, businesses are investing in technologies that will shape the future while strengthening supply chains here in the UK.

But industry cannot do it alone.

Manufacturers have shown time and again that they are prepared to innovate and adapt. Now they need policy that matches that ambition. A clear industrial strategy, investment in skills and competitive energy costs are no longer desirable, they’re essential if Britain is to remain globally competitive.

The conversations taking place across government and industry suggest there’s real momentum. The challenge now is to turn that intent into action.

Manufacturing has always been powered by its people. They’re the ones driving innovation, creating opportunity and building Britain’s future. Now, Number 10, is the time to back them.
