The rising demand for ‘silver bullet’ machines

Manufacturers machining large, high-value components are increasingly looking for ways to improve accuracy, reduce set ups and maximise spindle utilisation. According to Leader CNC Technologies, one machine in particular is proving to be the answer for many UK manufacturers.

Demand for the Toshiba/Shibaura TUE vertical turning centre with milling capability has grown significantly during 2026, with Leader CNC Technologies securing multiple orders and installations across a broad range of industries. Designed to machine large, predominantly turned components with milled features in a single set up, the machine is earning a reputation as the ‘silver bullet’ for manufacturers tackling complex applications.

One customer described the machine perfectly: “The ability to machine large, sometimes awkward-shaped parts accurately in one operation is like having that silver bullet you need to make money.”

Typical applications include valve bodies, pump casings, gear blanks, turbine components, heavy machinery parts, and large rings and discs. These components often present significant machining challenges due to their size, weight and material composition.

Machine rigidity plays a major role in overcoming these challenges. A highly rigid structure minimises deflection under heavy cutting loads, delivering greater dimensional accuracy.

To suppress vibration further, the TUE features a rigid cast-iron construction, a one-piece crossrail with increased stiffness, a substantial column design and a heavy-duty table equipped with four independent jaws for secure work holding. A thermally stable bed and lubrication cooling system help maintain machining accuracy during extended production runs.

The machine is equally at home machining demanding materials, including Inconel, titanium and hardened steels. A combination of high structural rigidity, spindle torque up to 31,396 Nm (on the TUE-200S), dual-face tool holding, through-spindle coolant capability and X-axis linear scale feedback helps maintain stable cutting conditions, consistent accuracy and extended tool life. Equipped with the FANUC 0i-TF Plus control, it provides reliable operation and operator-friendly features.
