Supporting the UK defence sector with access to niche tech
The UK has a proud history of producing some of the best quality defence equipment in the world, from fighter aircraft to missiles and machine guns. As one of the most dynamic manufacturing industries, which, together with aerospace, accounts for over £12 billion in output, the defence sector is well-positioned to support the UK economy as it rebounds from the slump caused by the global pandemic.
For manufacturers, supporting the defence sector will help to underpin the economy as it slowly recovers in the next few years. Defence manufacturers will be able to improve their profitability, secure new export opportunities, and strengthen global supply chains, while continuing to support over 207,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Nearly three-quarters of manufacturing SMEs are investing heavily in digital and AI technology, improving every element of the design and engineering process. Access to cutting-edge tech means products and equipment for defence can be produced more economically than ever, while securing the highest standards of production. In aerospace and defence, product specifications need to be even more stringent than in other industries, so advanced technique are utilised to achieve the standards that other methods cannot.
For the UK’s manufacturing workforce in the defence sector, the future is particularly optimistic. Average salaries are high – and professional development is a consistent priority, so SMEs benefit from a stable workforce that is highly valued and, in return, committed. With the best talent in the industry, output will continue to be high, while overseas partners will be attracted by the high standards that British manufacturers deliver. The sector also demonstrates positive social responsibility to its workers, with most businesses ensuring diversity and inclusivity in their recruitment processes. Two-thirds of manufacturers invest in apprenticeships while nearly all engage in training programmes to ensure staff stay at the forefront of engineering.
