Sunnen introduces SV-45 vertical honing machine for taller and deeper workpieces

Sunnen Products Company, a global specialist in high-precision honing, bore sizing and engine rebuilding equipment, has expanded its vertical honing machine portfolio with the introduction of the SV-45 vertical honing machine. Designed to accommodate taller and deeper workpieces, the SV-45 delivers increased stroke capacity while maintaining the precision, flexibility and performance required for demanding industrial honing applications.

The SV-45 features an extended column design that provides 444.5 mm of additional stroke length compared to the SV-35. With a maximum stroke length of 1,200 mm, the machine is engineered to support manufacturers processing longer bores and larger components across a range of industries, without requiring a larger honing system.

The machine combines extended reach with proven honing performance, featuring spindle speeds from 50 to 600 rpm, a 3.4 kW servo spindle, and a 3.5 kW servo ballscrew stroking system. The SV-45 also provides 813 mm of X-axis carriage travel and accommodates workpiece and fixture weights up to 600 kg within a 1219 x 760 mm work envelope. A standard 206 litre honing oil reservoir with integrated filtration supports consistent process performance, while 400 VAC 50 Hz and 460 VAC 60 Hz three-phase electrical configurations are available.

At the core of the SV-45 is Sunnen’s Sunnen2 control system, developed specifically for honing applications. The intuitive touchscreen interface provides enhanced process control, simplified set up and real-time monitoring capabilities that help improve productivity, repeatability and bore quality.

Synchronised spindle and stroker mechanisms maintain a consistent crosshatch finish throughout the bore while minimising rollover at bore entrances and exits. Additional capabilities include automatic tool protection, programmable process controls and compatibility with Sunnen’s broad range of honing tools, abrasives and process solutions.

Designed for both durability and operational flexibility, the SV-45 incorporates a heavy-duty cast iron column, welded machine base, integrated filtration system and front-loading machine architecture. Standard CE-compliant safety features include interlocked access panels, safety PLC functionality and safe limited set-up speeds to support safe operation in modern manufacturing environments.
