New DMG Mori travelling column machining centre boosts production of extra-large components

DMG Mori is introducing a new XXL four-axis travelling-column machining centre with a ±120 degree swivelling B-axis spindle head capable of machining components up to 7,200 mm long and 12 tonnes in weight within a working volume of 6000 x 1100 x 1050 mm. Of modular design, customers can also specify the DMF 600|11 can as a five- or five-axis machine with one or two optional rotary NC positioning tables, or alternatively torque tables for turning operations at up to 1000 rpm.
The rotary tables, which are each capable of supporting fixtured parts weighing 2 tonnes, are set flush into the fixed table at either or both ends. If a user opts for the latter, twin-table configuration, a partition is available to divide the working area into two independent zones to allow pendulum machining. In times of increasing component diversity and more frequent production of one-offs, this ensures a high degree of flexibility and optimal utilisation of the production platform.
If gear cutting, grinding, fine drilling or deep-hole drilling are integrated into the working area to supplement milling and turning, the range of one-hit machining possibilities widens, releasing capacity on other machines, reducing throughput times, and promoting higher and more consistent component quality.
Dimensional accuracy and surface quality arrive courtesy of the stable machine design, which is based on a cast bed, three linear guideways in the X axis located outside the machining area and a symmetrical structure. Extensive cooling of the spindle, drives, B axis and ballscrews ensures thermal stability.
Spindle options are available to address different applications. Offering speeds ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 rpm, speedMASTER spindles are suitable for precision milling, while powerMASTER spindles with a torque of up to 430 Nm enable heavy-duty machining of demanding materials.
As standard, the DMF 600|11 achieves rapid linear traverse speeds of 42 m/min and acceleration of 4 m/s² in all axes. An optionally available ‘Dynamic Package’ increases these values to 80 m/min in the X axis and 60 m/min in the Y and Z axes, while elevating acceleration to 6 m/s².
The tool magazine has space for 40 ISO40 tools up to 400 mm in length (ISO50 – 450 mm/HSK100 – 540 mm) as standard. The magazine can be expanded to 300 tool positions, which minimises set-up times when there’s significant variation in the types of component being produced. As with the smaller 200, 300 and 400 models in the DMF range, tool changes are carried out behind the table to avoid collisions.
Automation further increases the productivity of the DMF 600|11. For example, with DMG Mori’s modular, robotic workpiece handling solution, MATRIS, production can continue autonomously around the clock. Driverless transport systems from the AMR series are able to supply the machine with material and tools. Automated manufacturing increases productivity and reduces the workload on skilled operators, who can concentrate on other tasks like preparing new orders and quality control.
