MAPAL’s OptiMill-HPC-Pocket: Efficient pocket plunge milling

MAPAL says the solid-carbide milling cutters in its OptiMill-HPC-Pocket product family deliver precision, efficiency and versatility in pocket milling. The company is now adding several new Z4 length variants to the portfolio.

Solid-carbide milling cutters in the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket product family are designed for long tool life and high process reliability. These desirable outcomes are achieved through specially prepared cutting edges and wear-resistant coatings, while large chip spaces allow for fast and reliable chip removal, even at high material removal rates.

Innovative tool geometry also plays its part, helping to prevent chip congestion and ensuring smooth machining with excellent surface finishes. The MAPAL OptiMill-HPC-Pocket is suitable for a wide range of applications thanks to its patented plunge face, featuring an innovative point-thinning design and integrated drill tip. These applications include pocket milling, groove milling, grooving, helix milling and fast ramping at angles of up to 45°, all at very high feed rates.

As short as possible, as long as necessary – the OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket for steel and cast materials

MAPAL has been successfully established on the market for 10 years with the three-flute version of its OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket for machining steel and cast materials. The new four-flute version now enables higher machining speeds thanks to the additional cutting edge. MAPAL combines its proven pocket technology with experience in trochoidal milling, allowing deep cavities to be machined quickly.

While the Z3 previously came in three different lengths, MAPAL is expanding the range to include the four-flute version, available in short, long and overlong variants. In line with the principle of “as short as possible, as long as necessary”, customers can select the optimum tool length to suit requirements. Shorter cutting edges and reduced carbide content save costs, especially in series production with high quantities. Shorter versions also benefit from faster circumferential machining.

Whether customers opt for the Z3 or Z4 depends on the application. For applications that focus on face milling, MAPAL recommends the three-flute version. Its more robust face geometry is particularly useful when the milling cutter frequently needs to plunge into the material. The four-flute version excels in circumferential machining. With the fourth cutting edge, the tool is not only faster but also has a longer tool life.

Going even further in aluminium: Four-flute version offers more length options

MAPAL’s OptiMill-Alu-HPC-Pocket is the dedicated product line for machining aluminium. Here too, the company has expanded its portfolio, now also offering the four-flute version in long and overlong options. This allows the tool manufacturer to meet market demands for significantly faster machining and higher volumes in aluminium.

The milling cutters are available as standard in diameters from 3.8 to 20 mm with HB shank form. Special radii and HA shank form are available on request. MAPAL also offers tool kits. For maximum process reliability, the MillChuck HB is recommended as the tool adapter.

Now that the product family is complete, the OptiMill-Uni-HPC-Pocket primarily targets general mechanical engineering as well as mould making and deep pocketing, with the cutters for aluminium workpieces also covering the aerospace sector. With the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket, users have a true all-rounder at their disposal, eliminating the need for two or even three other tools. This reduces tool changes and increases productivity.

The robust geometry delivers consistent results without fluctuation and, thanks to process stability, enables reliable use in automated manufacturing environments, even when the machining conditions are not ideal. The additional length options reduce costs and improve resource efficiency: users can select the appropriate projection length for each application – as short as possible, as long as necessary. This reduces carbide usage where cutting edge length is not needed, while at the same time increasing rigidity and process reliability compared with a universal milling cutter that has to cover all applications.

Overall, MAPAL’s complete OptiMill-HPC-Pocket product family delivers a double benefit in terms of cost efficiency: fewer tools in use and, thanks to application-specific length selection, optimised carbide usage. This keeps costs down while also increasing process reliability. It’s precisely this combination that makes the OptiMill-HPC-Pocket an attractive solution for both series and flexible manufacturing.
