Innovation in vertical honing technology

Following extensive research and input from machine tool operators, Sunnen have launched an innovative new series of vertical honing machines.

Featuring a powerful new system control and OPC protocol. Minimized set up times, automatic and a robotic load/unload integration option is available for mid- to high- part production. Sunnen is advancing honing technology with the new SV-3000 series vertical honing systems.

This series features a new Beckhoff – based industrial control, designed to include EtherCAT industrial communication for fast response time and increased process control. The powerful control system includes a large touch screen and capacity to program custom part load/unload operations. Intuitive adjustments as well as tool selection, dwelling, setup mode, handling, expansion/retraction of tools, and more are all adjusted via the touchscreen. The intuitive nature of the control means that new operators can be trained quickly to process complex or difficult-to-hone parts.

The SV-3000 series incorporates synchronized servo stroke and spindle motors that enable constant crosshatch finishes. The drive technology also enables the machines to hone only on the pull stroke to easily produce custom profiled and tapered bores. It also includes a load-sensing feed system that maximizes productivity and produces tolerances below 0.5 µm on a wide range of smalldiameter parts.

Sunnen solicited input from global customers during the development of the SV-3000 series. The software for these next generation hones has been completely re-written using the latest programming languages and technologies.

In addition to an all-new exterior appearance, the latest ergonomic and safety features have been incorporated. A centrally mounted operator station can be easily positioned to suit the operator’s preference and/or shopfloor space.

The new SV-3000 uses a OPC UA interface, allowing real time remote process monitoring, an important consideration for the implementation of Industry 4.0.
