Enhanced miniature turning range offers ‘all-in-one’ solution

TaeguTec has expanded its WINIGROOVE miniature insert system beyond grooving applications to deliver a comprehensive solution for small-hole internal machining. The enhanced product line now encompasses internal turning, profiling and threading operations, addressing the growing demand for versatile tooling solutions in small parts machining.
The WINIGROOVE system utilises a new insert geometry combined with an inclined clamping mechanism to enable reliable internal grooving operations within the 6 to 8 mm diameter range. Internal coolant-designed holders deliver pinpointed coolant flow directly to the cutting edge, facilitating improved tool life, enhanced machining performance and optimal chip evacuation in confined bores where conventional tooling solutions struggle to maintain stability and evacuate swarf.
The expanded portfolio now encompasses four distinct insert configurations addressing specific machining requirements. The TMIR/L insert handles internal grooving operations with precise groove widths from 0.5 to 2 mm, while the new TMIR/L-T variant delivers internal turning capability with approach angles of 20° and 47°. The TMIR/L full-radius insert enables complex internal profiling, and the TMIR/L-MT threading insert can process 60° metric threads across pitch ranges from 0.5 to 1.75 mm.
Two holder configurations support the expanded insert range. According to TaeguTec, the TMIHR/L steel boring bar series offers cost-effective solutions for general applications with overall lengths of 80 mm and reach depths up to 16 mm. For demanding applications requiring maximum rigidity, the TMIHR/L-C carbide boring bar range delivers vibration damping with reach depths extending to 32 mm while maintaining the critical internal coolant delivery system.
Recent comparative trials demonstrate the system’s performance advantages in production environments. Internal turning trials in alloy steel AISI 4140 material achieved a 22% tool life improvement compared with conventional carbide tooling. Separate grooving trials in carbon steel AISI 1020 delivered tool life increases of 50%.
The modular system architecture reduces inventory requirements while maximising operational flexibility. Manufacturers can address the complete spectrum of internal machining operations with the toolholder platform, which is available from 54 to 100 mm overall length. It combines easily with interchangeable insert geometries to minimise costs and simplify set ups. The quick-change insert design enables rapid conversion between grooving, turning, profiling and threading operations without lengthy tool changes or machine downtime.
The complete WINIGROOVE expansion is available with TaeguTec’s TT4430 and TT8020 grades to suit a wide range of workpiece materials.
